Another billet was sent for; indeed, several, as I found them either unsuitable or occupied. In the latter case it appeared that I had been deceived by the presentation of old billets, the parties having left. This afternoon was more successful. On calling at a good-looking house, the servant said, on the presentation of the billet, there was an officer already in the house. However, the master being at home, I requested to see him. On my introduction, after explaining the object of my visit, a billet was produced. He said he could not lodge two officers. I then asked for the officer, but he was not at home; then for his room and baggage, but the luggage he had taken with him. The master then showed me his room, and an excellent stable. Seeing I could not be more pleasantly lodged had all the houses of the town been offered to my choice, I said to him, "We shall be very good friends. There will be no late hours. That I should give very little trouble." We have since been very friendly. I have not been so pleasantly lodged since entering the country. My cheerful room looks into a nice garden at the back of the house, free of all the noise of the street. I do not think the lady would like to be deprived of the corresponding room facing the street, to one of the windows of which she has mirrors so placed as to reflect up from the street-door, so that every visitor stands revealed to her view. I dined this day with Powel, meeting some of his brother officers of the Guards. 19th July.--The Prince of Orange being about to take the command of this army, Lord Lynedock, previous to his retiring, has paid a visit to Antwerp. This morning, about five o'clock, he reviewed the garrison....
